Maximilian, Emperor of Mexico
Maximilian of Habsburg , (Vienna 1832 – Mexico 1867) was an archduke of the House of Habsburg, brother of the Austrian emperor Franz Joseph and son-in-law of the Belgian king Leopold I. Before arriving in Mexico, Maximilian was governor of the Italian provinces belonging to the Empire Austrian. It was in 1861 that the French invaded Mexico to demand payment of the debts of the Juárez government and once there the French emperor Napoleon III decided to establish himself to obtain influence in Latin America for the benefit of France, so with the support of Mexican conservatives He managed to give the Crown to Maximilian. In 1864, Maximilian of Habsburg became Emperor of Mexico, and arrived with his wife Carlota to settle. During his mandate, Maximilian applied a policy that affected conservative groups, which is why his popularity fell with the conservatives and with Napoleon III himself, who withdrew his support. It was then that the liberal forces provoked a civil war, where the emperor himself faced them in battle without success in 1867, after which he was recruited and sentenced to death in June of that same year. His remains were sent to Austria.
